Foreshore

I used to always make castles on the beach
when the sea went out in the morning.
I dug trenches down to ground water
and built forts as high as my chest.
Hours working as the waves rolled in,
all the while both sun and tide rose
and the castle became engulfed.
It never mattered how deep the moats
nor how thickly packed the sand walls,
the ocean always claimed the castles on its shores.
